Waterlooville Town Centre
Busy shopping centre and pedestrianised precinct serving a wide suburban catchment
The commercial heart of Waterlooville, centred on the pedestrianised Wellington Way and the Waterlooville Shopping Centre. The town centre grew from a crossroads hamlet in the nineteenth century into a busy retail and service hub serving a wide catchment area. Wellington Way, the main shopping street, was pedestrianised and redeveloped in the 1970s as part of the construction of the modern shopping precinct. The precinct houses a mix of chain stores, independent shops, cafes, banks and service businesses. Asda anchors the eastern end, and a large Sainsbury's sits to the north. The town centre also has the library, a Wetherspoon pub, several charity shops and a regular market. The architecture is predominantly 1970s and later, with little surviving from the earlier village. London Road, the old main road, runs through the centre and carries traffic north and south. Maurepas Way, the inner relief road named after Waterlooville's twin town in France, loops around the western edge. The town centre is functional and busy, serving a population of over 60,000 across Waterlooville and Cowplain.
