St George's Church Built

1831

St George's Church was built in 1831 as a chapel of ease serving the growing hamlet at Waterlooville. The church was funded by public subscription and built in a simple Gothic style. Its construction was an important moment in the hamlet's development, giving Waterlooville its own place of worship for the first time and marking its emergence as a distinct community rather than a loose collection of houses along a road. The church was later enlarged as the population grew, and it remains a prominent landmark on London Road. St George's gave the hamlet a focal point and a sense of permanence that the pub alone could not provide.
