Bus Services in Waterlooville
Getting around without a car
Waterlooville has no railway station, which makes buses the primary form of public transport for the town's sixty thousand residents. The bus network connects Waterlooville to Portsmouth, Havant, Petersfield, Horndean and surrounding villages, with the main bus stops located on London Road and around the town centre. Stagecoach and First Bus operate the majority of services, and the frequency of buses to Portsmouth city centre is generally good during peak hours.
The number 8 and number 37 services to Portsmouth are among the busiest routes, carrying commuters, students and shoppers between Waterlooville and the city. Services to Havant connect with the mainline railway, giving Waterlooville residents indirect access to the rail network for journeys to London, Brighton and beyond. Buses to Petersfield and the Meon Valley provide links to the countryside north of the town, though these services run less frequently.
Cowplain, Stakes and Purbrook are all served by local bus routes that feed into the Waterlooville town centre interchange. The Wecock Farm estate has dedicated bus services that connect the neighbourhood to shops and services. Evening and weekend services are reduced compared to weekday frequencies, and residents who rely on buses outside peak hours sometimes find the service insufficient for their needs.
The absence of a railway station is a long-standing frustration for Waterlooville residents. Various proposals for a new station or light rail link have been discussed over the years, but none has progressed beyond the planning stage. For now, the bus network remains the backbone of public transport in the town, supplemented by car use on the A3(M) and local road network.
