Cowplain: A Guide to Waterlooville's Northern Neighbour
Shops, services and community in Cowplain
Cowplain is the northern extension of the Waterlooville urban area, running along London Road from the main town centre towards Horndean. Although administratively part of the same borough, Cowplain has its own distinct identity, with a separate shopping parade, its own community organisations and a character that is slightly more village-like than the town centre.
The shops along London Road in Cowplain include a Co-op, takeaways, a pharmacy, hairdressers and various independent traders. The parade serves the daily needs of the surrounding residential streets, and many Cowplain residents do their routine shopping locally rather than driving to the main shopping centre. The Cowplain Activity Centre provides a community hub for events, classes and meetings.
Residentially, Cowplain is a mix of interwar semis, postwar council houses and newer private developments. The streets are quieter than those closer to the town centre, and the area has a settled, suburban character. Cowplain Community School is the main secondary school, and there are primary schools serving the younger age groups.
The boundary between Cowplain and Waterlooville proper is blurred, and residents of each area use the facilities of both. The bus services along London Road connect the two seamlessly, and the shared postcode district reinforces the sense of a single community. However, Cowplain residents often identify with their own area first, and the Cowplain name carries a local loyalty that distinguishes it from the larger Waterlooville identity.
