Purbrook: A Guide to the Southern Suburb

History, schools and green spaces in Purbrook

Purbrook lies to the south of Waterlooville, occupying the ground between the town centre and the northern edges of Portsmouth. The area has a longer history than Waterlooville itself, with Purbrook Heath providing common land that was used for centuries before the surrounding housing was built. Today, Purbrook is a predominantly residential suburb with good schools, green spaces and convenient access to both Waterlooville and Portsmouth.

Purbrook Park School is the area's main secondary school, and its reputation draws families from across the borough. The primary schools in Purbrook also have strong local followings. Education is one of the factors that makes Purbrook popular with families, and house prices in the area reflect this demand.

Purbrook Heath is the area's most significant green space, providing open heathland, woodland and paths that are used by walkers, joggers and dog walkers. The heath has ecological value as a remnant of the lowland heath that once covered much of this part of Hampshire, and it is managed to maintain its habitats.

The shops and services in Purbrook are modest, consisting of a small parade along Stakes Road and a few businesses scattered through the area. For major shopping, residents drive to Waterlooville or Havant. The pubs in Purbrook serve the local community, and the area has a quieter, more established feel than the newer parts of Waterlooville to the north.
